Positive Support for Parents and Children with Mental Health Challenges
This intermediate/advanced training for FIRST 5 partners will focus primarily on how best to support parents with mental health challenges to ensure optimal parent-child relationships, family well-being and recovery from mental illness. It will seek to dispel the myths of mental illness that create stigma and discrimination. By broadening knowledge of mental illness, we can replace misunderstanding, fear and judgment with insight, awareness and acceptance. With appropriate support, education and advocacy, families and individuals living with mental issues can and do recover.
This workshop will feature actual NAMI clients from three of its signature programs. Several individuals will share their personal stories as parents with mental illness with the daunting responsibility of raising their families. Another client will share her lived experience as the parent of a child with mental health issues. Their compelling and personal testimonies of living with and overcoming the challenges posed by mental illness will both touch and teach you so much applicable to your professional and personal life.
The goal of this workshop is to provide FIRST 5 partners with practical information, strategies and resources to support families who have mental health challenges within them. Bring your questions and concerns so we can make this session interactive and focused on your immediate needs. Certificates will be provided.
This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education for LCSW’s
and LMFT’s required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Professionals outside the FIRST 5 network and parents/caregivers are also welcome.
