Course Description:

Play and the Very Young Child with ASD (March 19, 2013)

This intermediate/advanced-level training for FIRST 5 partners will address how to make play fun and productive/therapeutic for the very young child with autism spectrum disorder.  After presenting typical play development in the very young child, it will focus on how ASD influences a child’s play experiences.  Next will come specific strategies of when/how to intervene, followed by research findings and practical implications. Content will be presented through lecture, video clips and discussion.  A parent panel will conclude the session and will offer thoughts on why playgroups are important to the child with ASD, what to look for in a playgroup, and how to generalize playgroup activities at home.
The goal of this workshop is to provide FIRST 5 partners with practical information, strategies and resources to support families in playing happily and beneficially with their young children with ASD.   Bring your questions and concerns so that we can make this session interactive and better focused on your immediate needs.

Additional Information:

Parents/caregivers and professionals outside the FIRST 5 network are also welcome.
