Course Description:

Impact of Trauma on Childhood and Lifelong Development

This intermediate/advanced-level training for FIRST 5 partners will define trauma and its potential short- and long-term neurobiological, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, relational and physiological impact.  We will include a brief review of the Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) study and a discussion of what can later turn into “trauma re-enactment.”  We will focus on the central importance of early identification and intervention into childhood trauma and attachment difficulties to mitigate emotional deprivation, child abuse and neglect; the positive/negative impact of safe/unsafe, attuned/mis-attuned and appropriately responsive/non-responsive parenting and protection from severe and cumulative trauma; repair of mis-attunement and emotional dysregulation; and the teaching of affect regulation skills to children to prevent developmental damage and to provide healing and recovery from trauma.  Content will be presented through lecture, videoclips and discussion.
The goal of this workshop is to provide FIRST 5 partners with practical information, strategies and resources to support families experiencing or at risk for trauma.   Bring your questions and concerns so we can make this session interactive and better focused on your immediate needs.  Certificates are provided and CEUs are available.
