Course Description:

Current Research Findings in ASD: An Overview

This intermediate/advanced-level training for FIRST 5 partners will provide an overview of current ASD research in three critical areas: early intervention/treatment efficacy, genetics and neuroimaging, and diagnosis.  It will explain why these findings are important for practitioners working with families whose very young children are on the autistic spectrum.  The volume of research, coupled with the increased ease of gathering and disseminating information, has made it increasingly difficult for families and professionals to “weed through” the most current understanding of this complex disorder. More than ever it is important to have a shared understanding of what we “know” about ASD so that we can “do” appropriately.
First we will review the basics of scientific inquiry, referencing A Parent’s Guide to Research, and discuss important aspects to consider when reading and evaluating such studies. Next we will introduce some key new discoveries in each of the three specific areas noted above. We will present specific research studies and findings to help illustrate outcomes.  Our focus will be on implications for treatment now and later on.
The goal of this talk is to provide FIRST 5 partners with the ability to consider research in the field of ASD and share this information with families.  Bring your questions and comments so that we can make this session interactive and better focused on your immediate needs.  Certificates of participation and CEUs are available for professionals.
