Course Description:

Strategies to Promote Sensory Motor Development in the Very Young Child

The first five years of life presents wonderful opportunities and challenges in the realm of sensory motor development. We will offer strategies for supporting young children in their ability to process sensory information so they feel comfortable and regulated in their home, daycare/preschool and community. We will highlight strategies that foster the important gross and fine motor milestones we expect children to meet at this stage. Next we will explore the role of the body’s senses and motor skills in the child’s ability to make friends, create plans for play and stay organized throughout the day. Participants will deepen their understanding of why children fluctuate between needing ‘cozy spaces’ and giant jungle gyms. We will address the impact of sensory processing difficulties and motor delays on attention and emotion. The workshop will include recent research and new evidence-based information from a variety of fields and perspectives. Refresh and add to your knowledge base. The training will include experiential activities, videos, case studies and a bit of movement. The goal of this workshop is to provide FIRST 5 partners with practical information, strategies and resources to support families who have young children with suspected or identified sensory processing challenges. Please bring your questions and concerns so we can make this session interactive and properly focused on your immediate needs. Certificates are provided, and CEUs will be available.
